Fall feels like a deep breath after summer's rush - don’t you think? There’s something about the cooler mornings, golden light, and the first crunch of leaves under your boots that whispers, “It’s time to slow down and soak it all in.”
As a photographer, there's no month quite like it. One moment that stands out was a fall session where I captured a family in a park just as the sun was dipping low behind the trees. The little ones were chasing each other, l
eaves swirling around them, and mom and dad were laughing right along. It was the kind of warm, candid moment that you can't really pose - it just unfolds. That’s the magic of Fall.
If you're thinking about capturing your own memories this season, I want to share a few tips from my heart and lens to yours. Fall is more than just a season - it’s a feeling. And it’s my favorite time to photograph it.
Why Fall Just Feels Different (and How I Embrace It in Photography)
By the time Fall arrives, most of us are pivoting. Summer fun is behind us. The kids are settling into school, weekends start to fill with apple picking and cozy sweaters, and there's a shift in the air that’s more than temperature.
As a Jersey Shore girl, I adore my golden summer sessions by the ocean. But when fall rolls in, something in me shifts too. I get this cozy, creative energy that makes me even more intentional with my work. That beautiful blend of changing foliage, crisp light, and peaceful afternoons in local parks? It’s a photographer’s dream.
For families who’ve been meaning to book portraits but put it off during summer chaos, Fall is the perfect sweet spot. It’s not too cold, not too hot - just right for relaxed, natural moments.
My Top Tips for Beautiful, Personalized Fall Portraits
If you're considering a portrait session this fall (and I hope you are!), here are a few ways we can make it even more meaningful and stress-free.
1. Prioritize Cozy, Coordinated Fall Styling
Styling can shape the whole tone of your portraits. In the fall, I always recommend families lean into rich, earthy tones.
Think burgundy, burnt orange, mustard yellow, deep reds, and forest green.
Plaid works surprisingly well when it’s balanced with solids.
The goal is coordination, not matching. You want to look like a family, not a uniform.
I love helping parents build outfits around one key item - usually something mom loves most - and then we color-flow from there. Don’t be afraid to text me photos of what you’re considering. I’ve got you.
2. Location, Location... and a Little Sentiment
Fall gives us so many dreamy options. I tend to gravitate toward local parks where the foliage is bursting with color, and where there’s space for kids to run free. Some of my favorite spots include:
Verona Park for its golden light and scenic bridges
Saddle River County Park for a nature-forward feel
Timber Valley Tree Farm for texture and charm
But I also love it when families suggest places that are meaningful to them. A backyard where your kids play, a beach you visit every year—it all adds to the authenticity.
3. Embrace the Imperfect Moments
Fall sessions aren’t about perfect smiles or flawless hair. They’re about how your daughter gently tugs on your sleeve, how your son lights up when he runs toward you with a handful of leaves... those in-between moments? That’s where the story lives.
I always encourage families to come feeling relaxed, open, and ready to connect. I’ll guide you, yes. I’ll offer posing tips and direction. But I also leave space for spontaneity - because you don’t need to perform. The goal is for you to just be.
The Meaning Behind the Memories
Fall portraits aren’t just about the season. They’re about transition - kids growing fast, routines shifting, families learning how to hold tight while letting go.
As someone who deeply values legacy, this month always reminds me of how quickly time moves. I know firsthand the ache of moments we wish we had captured. It’s why I do this work with so much heart. Every photo I take is shaped by that longing - and the joy of giving others the keepsakes I never got.
So if you’re on the fence about a fall session, let me be the one to tell you: this season’s worth remembering.
