Mini Sessions vs. Full Sessions: Which One Is Right for Your Family?

Are You Expecting a Quick Win?
A lot of families come to me thinking mini sessions are the obvious choice.
Shorter time. Fewer decisions. Done and out the door.
And honestly? I get it. Life is busy, kids have short attention spans, and the idea of keeping everyone together and happy for a full session can feel like a lot.
But here's what I've noticed after working with so many families - and what I really want you to know before you book:
The first 10 to 15 minutes of any session are almost always the warm-up.
What's Really Happening at the Start of a Session
Think about it. You just got everyone dressed, maybe wrangled a few last-minute outfit changes, drove to the location, and now you're standing in front of a camera.
Kids are still figuring things out. Parents are a little tense. Everyone is adjusting.
That's completely normal - and it's actually part of the process.
The thing is, in a mini session, that warm-up period is a big chunk of your total time. Before anyone fully relaxes, before the real smiles come out, before the kids stop looking stiff... the session is wrapping up.
What Changes in a Full Session
This is where things shift.
There's room to breathe
Once we move past that initial adjustment phase, something clicks. The shoulders drop. The kids start goofing around. You stop thinking about how you look and just start being together.
That's when I get to do what I love most - photograph the real you.
Personalities come out naturally
In a full session, there's time for personalities to show up on their own. I'm not rushing to capture something before the clock runs out. We can move through different spots, try different moments, and let the story unfold at a pace that feels easy.
The connection becomes visible
The images that feel effortless - the ones where you look at a photo and think, that's us - those come from time. Not posing. Not pressure. Just genuine moments that were given space to happen.
So When Does a Mini Session Make Sense?
Mini sessions can be a great fit in certain situations:
You want updated holiday or seasonal portraits and already know what to expect from a session
Your kids are older and tend to warm up quickly
You're looking for a few beautiful images rather than a full story
You've worked with me before and we already have that comfort and trust built
But if this is your first time in front of a professional camera, or if your kids tend to need time to settle in, or if you want photos that truly feel like your family - a full session gives us the space to create that.

Why This Matters to Me
I started photographing families because I believe these portraits are more than just nice pictures. They're something you hold onto. Something you pass down.
I know firsthand what it feels like to wish you had more time - more photos - more preserved moments. That's exactly why I won't rush the process.
When we have the time we need, the images reflect it. You can feel the difference.
